Fields of clinical practice for which this course is applicable

Concepts and tools learned in this course will have immediate clinical applicability. Because of its broad based therapeutic effects, MYT can be used in an array of clinical environments and with varied patient populations. Some examples, but not limited to these: MSK/Orthopaedics (all conditions), Neurology (Parkin- son’s, MS, ALS, Stroke, etc), Arthritis (OA and RA), Fibromyalgia, Chronic Pain, Pelvic floor Pain/Dysfunction, Post-Surgical Conditions, Cancer, Cardiorespiratory, Obesity, Diabetes, Chronic Stress, Mental Health, etc..


Pre-requistes   
This is a 1 day introductory course for health care professionals (HCPs) on how to integrate yoga into their clinical practice. Prior yoga experience a strong asset but not absolutely necessary. HCPs with knowledge of anatomy, and prior experience in observing and evaluating posture and movement, would reap the most benefit from this course.

  • Historical roots of yoga

  • What are scientifically supported therapeutic effects of yoga?

  • What is Yoga Therapy?

  • What is Medical Yoga Therapy (MYT)?

  • The Biopsychosocial Approach to evaluation and treatment.

  • Pentagon of Wellness

  • MYT Evaluation Tools

  • Pranayama (Breath)

  • Meditation / Mindfulness / Stress Reduction Techniques

  • Basic introduction to some Asana (Physical Postures and Movement)

  • Case Studies



General objectives

This is a 1 day introductory course for health care professionals (HCPs) on how to integrate yoga into their clinical practice. Prior yoga experience a strong asset but not absolutely necessary. HCPs with knowledge of anatomy, and prior experience in observing and evaluating posture and movement, would reap the most benefit from this course.


At the end of this course, participants will: 

  • Know what Medical Yoga Therapy (MYT) is.

  • Understand the scientifically supported effects and mechanisms of action of MYT.

  • Know how to evaluate and treat patients through the Biopsychosocial Model..

  • Understand the Pentagon of Wellness approach of the MYT model.

  • Know how to use some MYT tools and techniques for evaluation and treatment of patients.

  • Be able to integrate MYT into their own particular health care environment and with varying patient populations.

  • Have a basic foundation of MYT that can be used for future MYT courses and certification as a Medical Yoga Therapist.

Required material
  • Yoga mat

  •  Pen and marker

  •  Bottle of water

  • Thick blancket

  •  1 yoga strap

  •  *2 yoga blocs

How to dress

Wear comfortable yoga-style clothing when doing the exercises
