How it works

A clinician will customize the stimulation parameters to reflect the desired muscle contraction for each muscle group. The parameters will be adjusted to suit the level of sensation and the therapeutic needs of the patient. The sensation varies widely between someone with complete or incomplete spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, or traumatic brain injury - the ability to customize stimulation settings is essential for patient comfort, safety and results. Complete stimulation customization is unique and only available with Restorative Therapies iFES devices.

Electrodes are placed on the target muscle groups and the clinician will perform muscle tests to ensure optimal response. Once the settings are customized, the warm-up phase will begin to slowly move the body and accelerate the stimulation. The phase of active therapy will begin and end with a return to calm. The warm-up and cool-down phases aim to ensure patient comfort and safety. Active therapy ensures that the appropriate levels of resistance and stimulation are applied to optimize session results.


What is FES?

FES stands for Functional Electrical Stimulation, a rehabilitation technique by which electrical current stimulates nerves to evoke muscle contractions. With the RT300 SEF creates a patterned movement of the arms or legs, allowing your muscles to actively work and contract even though you may have lost voluntary control of these muscles.

Any stimulation is properly coordinated during leg or arm movement based on muscle selection.

Shoulder: Shoulder and scapula stabilizers

Upper extremities: Biceps, triceps, anterior deltoid, posterior deltoid, wrist extensors, wrist flexors, hand extensors, hand flexors

Core and trunk: Abs and back muscle groups (eg erector spines)

Lower limb: Quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, gastrocnemius, tibialis anterior

Active therapy

Either way, active therapy means your muscles are actually working and performing the activity.
